For Gallantry | They also served

This exhibition coinciding with Remembrance Day on November 11th, showcases these special artworks by Bendigo Artists Sarah Wallace-Smith and Susan McMinn in this heart wrenching and awe inspiring series.

Sarah Wallace-Smith

A picture of my father was taken with a dog during WW2 which prompted me to start looking for war stories about dogs and the relationships formed with their humans. There is something rather wonderful about trying to describe everything from fur, fabric or flesh to blue skies or storm clouds with just a paper and pencil. Creating a backdrop that hints at why each animal was awarded the equivalent of the Victoria Cross or Purple Heart is often challenging, as the dogs look so beautiful on their own initially. I hope it helps pique the curiosity of the viewer.

Susan McMinn:

My PhD research was around the horse in war during the Palestine Campaigns of WW1. After researching stories about the Australian war horses plight during this campaign, I realised that I needed to go to Israel to look at and experience the Anzac trails and the landscape in which the horses travelled. The colour I use is representational of not only the land where the horses travelled but also where they fought and died. It was as if, during the painting process, I subconsciously released the horses back into the landscape by etching their form into the rich textures and tone.
